PhD Thesis: Male Professors Prefer Male Candidates

Marieke van den Brink, who is presenting her PhD thesis at Radboud University in Nijmegen, has found that two out of three professorial appointments are determined in close circles, with professors searching for candidates within their own network. As most professors are male, it is likely that the new appointees will also be male. Only 11% of Dutch professors are female, among the lowest percentage in Europe. Only Belgium, Malta and Germany have a lower percentage of women professors.
