Children’s Ombudsman: One in Ten Children Lives in Poverty

Children’s Ombudsman Marc Dullaert said that in the Netherlands one in ten children grows up in poverty. This means that 327,000 boys and girls often don’t eat healthy food, are not members of a sports club, do not get swimming lessons and have to wear old clothes and shoes because there is no money for new ones. He added that on the basis of the Convention of Children’s Rights, each child is entitled to a standard of living which is enough for its “physical, spiritual, intellectual and moral development.” Dullaert added that the number of children in The Netherlands who he is worried about for a variety of reasons, is even bigger at around half a million.
